![]() They should have realized what was going on and put a stop to it. The adults should have been, well.the adults should have been the adults. ![]() It should never have come down to a kid like her having to be the one to make people aware of the dangers against the magicas or be forced to save the day. But I also loved how she realized and discussed with herself that this should have been completely handled by the adults. ![]() The story is told through Mona's perspective, where she injects wit and humor into everything. I don't think I've ever listened to so many chapters about battle and preparation for battle in a middle grade book as I did in this one. And face the enemy she does - with bread! Who knew bread could have so many uses in battle? With a side-kick named Bob (yeast starter), a gingerbread man familiar, and a newfound belief and understanding of her talents she almost single-handedly helps win a war/battle. It doesn't take long before she learns there is a growing threat that magicas like her are facing in the city-state and while most magical individuals leave (or are killed), Mona soon finds herself in the unenviable position of having to stand-up and fight against the enemy. And although this is considered minor magic, she still gets accused of the murder solely because she is a wizard. It all starts when Mona discovers a dead body in their bakery. ![]() ![]() The author must have had a blast writing this because it shows. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments Stories from your life and others![]() ![]() In “Story of Your Life,” Chiang uses innovations in nonlinear narrative techniques and the invention of a semasiographic written language called Heptapod B to explore the ways that the structure of language influences cognition (Baghramian and Carter 2019). The sensational and the newsworthy serve to highlight a quieter revolution, though, a deep revision of the everyday ways that people related to language, the experience of time, and each other. ![]() Nirvana released “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and Microsoft released Windows 95. Third Wave feminism was gaining momentum at the same time as the dot-com bubble. News of the Gulf War was televised in real time, gay rights activists found close-knit communities online as hate crimes peaked across the country, and by 1998 the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal was underway, spurred by rumors posted on an obscure political weblog (Darke 2019). ![]() It was before the rise of now-ubiquitous and near-instantaneous communications technologies like smartphones and social media, but the collapse of time and distance had already begun to accelerate. Ted Chiang’s novella “Story of Your Life,” an elegant experiment combining aliens, variational principles, and the linguistic relativity hypothesis, was first published in 1998, just as the western world was coming online and people were beginning to come in contact with each other in unprecedented ways. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano![]() ![]() We follow him through the days after the crash, as he moves in with his aunt (Taylor Schilling of “Orange Is the New Black”), struggles to sleep and struggles in his waking hours, and begins to piece together what he ought to make of the rest of his life. Here, Edward is played by newcomer Colin O’Brien traveling with his parents and brother, he ends up the sole survivor of a plane crash. ![]() As such, it becomes a punishing sit, with promised catharsis lying perpetually out of reach. Based on Ann Napolitano’s bestseller, “Dear Edward” has a novelist’s ambition but not the requisite gift for structure. Taken in the form Apple TV+ has provided us via show creator Jason Katims, though, “Dear Edward” is a bit of a mess - a jumble of semi-intersecting characters whom we meet for long enough to learn more detail about their lives than is strictly necessary, but who blink out of focus when it comes to holding our sympathy. ![]() That’s because in any era other than this one, this smart but unshapely literary adaptation, full of good intentions and interesting characters but bloated beyond recognition at 10 hours, would have been a comparatively lithe movie. ![]() “ Dear Edward” is the sort of show that makes you understand why the great middle - the set of works that don’t feature aliens or superheroes, and that are intended for grown-up audiences - has fallen out of the theatrical moviegoing business. ![]() ![]() Either you're digging what Yakitate! Japan is laying down or you don't. I think it's a necessary trade-off, at least for the character as he is at this point in the story, but it's one that does come at a cost.Īnyway, nothing here to change the mind of anyone who has read the first three volumes. But the trade-off is that he remains somewhat enigmatic-the text keeps him at arm's reach, rarely giving us insight as to his own thoughts and feelings. This allows for additional context and commentary from more knowledgeable characters I mean, let's be honest-Azuma is pretty clueless about many things and might not make a great perspective character. Each "bout" is able to be experienced by us as it's being experienced by the audience. We often don't know Azuma's "battle plan" until it is being enacted-or even until the results are in front of the judge. There's several perks to this perspective: 1. Instead we view him through the eyes of the people around him, particularly the manager of his store and his rival/co-worker. He's definitely the protagonist, but he's rarely the perspective character. I find myself surprised at how Yakitate! Japan treats Azuma. But how can he survive in a baking competition where one of the tasks requires noodle making? isn't baking? We all know Azuma can bake-that was established volume 1. We still find ourselves in the throes of the Pantasia rookie tournament as Azuma competes in a task that. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments Modern romance ansari![]() ![]() ![]() Some of our problems are unique to our time. “Why did this guy just text me an emoji of a pizza?” “Should I go out with this girl even though she listed Combos as one of her favorite snack foods?
